about

Born and raised in McAllen, Texas, Gabriel Gilbert Cardenas moved to Austin soon after earning his undergraduate degree from the University of Texas - Pan American (now the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley).

He began his career at the state capitol, serving as a legislative aide and committee clerk for a Valley legislator over several legislative sessions. During this time, he pursued a Master’s degree in Public Administration from Southwest Texas State University (now Texas State University).

Shortly before completing his master’s degree, Gabriel started working with the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT) as a legislative assistant, later becoming their outreach coordinator. In these roles, he established vital relationships with legislative offices, community organizations, and industry stakeholders.

After fifteen years at PUCT, Gabriel transitioned to the Texas School for the Deaf (TSD), where he now serves as the Public Information Officer (PIO). Embracing this role, he continues to learn and appreciate American Sign Language and Deaf culture, working tirelessly to promote the school and educate the public about the incredible achievements and services provided by TSD.

Gabriel is also deeply involved in his community, having served as president of the Pflugerville Little League for two years and as a board member for six years.

In his spare time, Gabriel enjoys indulging in the arts, running, hiking, listening to music, watching sports, and writing.
